North Allegheny Tournament: 2-13-10
The Butler Golden Tornado Wrestling team finished off its fine season by not only winning the North Allegheny Tournament but also winning the team strength award!They edged out North Allegheny Gold for both of these awards.The Junior High “GT” brought 16 wrestlers to the tournament and brought home 13 medals. All 16 of the Butler wrestlers won at least one of their matches.
Winning the tournament for the Tornado were Ryan Hannon 165 lbs and Zack Weaver 185 lbs.Both guys moved up a weight class to help the team and still were able to win their respective weight classes.Both Hannon and Weaver pinned their opponent in the finals.
Placing second for the Tornado were Connor Foust 75 lbs, Xavier Bennet 115 lbs, Will Bortmas 145 lbs, and Bryant Butler 210 lbs.Bryant Butler also moved up a weight class for the benefit of the team and was able to place second.
Placing third were Cody Houston 90 lbs, Korey Caudill 100 lbs, Jeremiah Bortmas 105 lbs, and Patrick Lokhaiser 155 lbs.Lokhaiser also moved up in weight class for the team and was able to place 3rd.
Earning fourth place finished for the Tornado were Kirk Gibson 110 lbs, Doug DeFrancisis 130 lbs, and Byron Minous 138 lbs.
The Golden Tornado finished their season with a 14-1 dual match record.They placed 3rd at the Burrell Duals, 3rd at the Shaler Titan Tournament,won the Butler Duals, and finished strong by winning the NA tournament this past weekend.Great Season guys!
Butler 52 Franklin Regional 33
On Wednesday Febuary 3rd the Butler Junior High Wrestling team wrestled its final dual match for the year at Franklin Regional.This “clash of the titans” included an undefeated Franklin Regional team and the “GT” came in 13-1.Franklin Regional came out of the gate fast with a 30-0 lead after the first 6 matches which included 3 technical falls.The Tornado would come back strong to win 11 of the final 12 matches in route to a 52-33 victory.
Kirk Gibson got the tornado on the scoreboard at 110 lbs with a hard fought 2-0 overtime decision.Following this was another overtime thriller at 115 lbs in which Xavier Bennet used a last second takedown to win in the ultimate tiebreaker ride-out.Next for the “GT” was Mike Fritz at 122 lbs.Down 3-2 in the 3rd period Fritz used a reversal to take his opponent to his back and get the fall.At 130 lbs Doug DeFrancisis would enjoy a 10-0 major decision.At 138 lbs David Slomers filled in and made quick work of his opponent.A nasty double leg to a half and then transitioning into a walk-up cradle, Slomers pinned his opponent within the first minute of the match.The Tornado would lose a close decision at 145 lbs but this would be their last loss of the evening.At 155 lbs Patrick Lokhaiser won an 8-4 decision.Ryan Hannon took a forfeit at 165 lbs.Zack Weaver used a first period cradle to pin his opponent at 185 lbs in the first period.Bryant Butler took a forfeit at 210 lbs.Matt Kenyon earned a first period fall against a good heavyweight wrestler.Connor Foust would round out the day for the “GT” with an 8-1 decision at 75 lbs.This finishes the dual meet year for the Junior High “GT” with an outstanding 14 wins with only 1 loss.They will finish their season at the North Allegheny Tournament.The tournament was originally scheduled for this Saturday Feb 6th but has been postponed due to weather.It will be rescheduled one of the next two Saturdays.

Butler 71 Latrobe 18: (1-27-10)
On Wednesday January 27 the Butler Junior High Wrestling team continued its fine season with an impressive 71-18 victory over Latrobe.Last year Latrobe was the winner of the NA tournament where the Junior High “GT” took 2nd.Butler avenged last years runner up finish in a big way.Butler got out to a 63-3 lead and never looked back.This improves their dual match record to 13 wins with 1 loss.They will return to action next Wednesday against a very strong Franklin Regional team.This will be a great test for the Golden Tornado.
Winners against Latrobe by fall were Cody Houston, Jacob Olenick, Will Bortmas, Ryan Hannon, Zack Weaver, and Bryant Butler. Winning by major decision was Korey Caudill by a score of 12-0 and Xavier Bennet by a score of 12-2. Doug DeFrancisis picked up a 7-1 decision in his first match back from injury. Receiving wins via forfeit were Connor Foust, Jared Hinkle, Ryan Hortsman, and Matt Kenyon.
Butler Junior High Duals:
On Saturday January 16, 2010 the Butler Junior High Wrestling team competed in the 4th annual Butler Duals.The “GT” went 4-0 on the day to win the tournament for the 3rd time in 4 years.This pushes their dual match record to 11 wins with 1 loss.
Butler started out the day with a 57-24 victory over Shaler.Winners for Butler by pinfall were Jared Hinkle, Ryan Hortsman, Cody Houston, Ryan Hannon, and Zack Weaver.Winning by major decision were Mason Kauffman and Patrick Lokhaiser.Winning by decision were Korey Caudill, Kirk Gibson, Zack Shultz, Jake Olenick, and Will Bortmas.Most outstanding wrestler for match was Jared Hinkle.Hinkle was up 7-0 and pushed his opponent for the fall in the 3rd period.He also did a great job of listening to the direction of the coaching staff.Great job Jared!
Next the Tornado defeated Fort Lebouf 81-15.Winning by fall were Korey Caudill, Mason Boy, Jake Olenick, Patrick Lokhaiser,and Ryan Hannon.Zack Shultz picked up a major decision.Receiving forfeits were Connor Foust, Jared Hinkle, Ryan Hortsman, Will Bortmas, Kirk Gibson, Xavier Bennett, Zack Weaver, and Bryant Butler.Most outstanding wrestler was Mason Boy.After a scoreless first period Mason came out in the 2nd period to pin his opponent.Great job Mason!
Up next was the match of the day between Butler and NA Black.The match was very exciting and went back and forth.After 11 matches the GT found themselves down 31-18.They responded in a big way to win the final 7 matches.The “GT” fought through two injuries and defeated the Tigers 52-31.Winning by fall were Cody Houston, Zack Weaver, and Matt Kenyon.Winning by decision were Korey Caudill, Xavier Bennett, Will Bortmas, Ryan Hannon, and Bryant Butler.Picking up forfeits were Connor Foust and Jared Hinkle.Mason Boy picked up an injury default victory after being headbutted by his opponent and being forced to default by the trainer.Xavier Bennett was the most outstanding wrestler for the match for his thrilling 3-1 overtime victory.Great job X-man!
The Tornado finished off the day with a 78-24 victory over Hopewell.Winning by fall were Korey Caudill, Xavier Bennett, Mike Fritz, and Zack Shultz.Cody Houston won by technical fall 16-0. Winning by decision were Connor Foust and Kirk Gibson.Picking up forfeits were Jake Olenick, Will Bortmas, Ryan Hannon, Zack Weaver, Bryant Butler, and Matt Kenyon.
Butler 79 Seneca 12: (1-20-10)
Last night (Wed Jan 20th) the Butler Junior High Wrestling team defeated section rival Seneca Valley by an impressive 79-12 score.The Junior High “GT” got out to an early 33-0 lead and never looked back.This extends their winning streak to 11 matches and puts their season record at 12-1.
Winning by fall for the tornado were Cody Houston, Mason Kauffman, Xavier Bennett, David Slomers, Will Bortmas, Ryan Hannon, and Zack Weaver.
Winning by decision were Korey Caudill and Jake Olenick.Patrick Lokhaiser earned a major decision.
Picking up forfeits were Connor Foust, Jared Hinkle, Ryan Horstman, and Matt Kenyon.
The outstanding wrestler for the night was David Slomers for his double leg and lift right into a half and pinning his opponent early in the first period.Great Job David!
Butler 78 Fox Chapel 9: (1-13-10)
On Wednesday night The Butler Junior High "GT" Wrestling team dominated Fox Chapel in route to a 78-9 score. This pushes the junior high "GT" to 7-1 on the year. Butler got off to a comanding 45-0 lead after 9 matches. After dropping one decison and one pin they got back on track to win the final 6 matches. In all the tornado scored 7 pins on the night.
Recording pins for Butler were: Jared Hinkle at 85 lbs (moved up a weight class and got the fall.. great job Jared!), Cody Houston at 90 lbs, Mason Kauffman at 100 lbs, Korey Caudill at 105 lbs, Kirk Gibson at 110 lbs, Xavier Bennett at 115 lbs, and Ryan Hannon at 155 lbs. Winning by decison for Butler were Zac Hutchison at 95 lbs by a 8-5 decision and Will Bortmas at 145 lbs by a 7-2 decision. Picking up wins by forfeit for Butler were Connor Foust at 80 lbs, Jake Olenick at 138 lbs, Zack Weaver at 165 lbs, Bryant Butler at 185 lbs, and Matt Kenyon at 250 lbs.
The outstanding wrestler for the night was Zak Hutchison at 95 lbs. Zak was down 5-1 in the 3rd period before getting a takedown and 3 near fall points to come away with an 8-5 decision. Zak showed our teams great conditioning in pushing his opponent and winning in the 3rd period. Great show of heart Zak!

Shaler Annual Titan Tournament: Third Place - 1-9-10
On Saturday Jan 9th, 2010 the Butler Junior High Wrestling team travelled to Shaler for the annual Titan Tournament.There were a total of 15 teams at the tournament.The “GT” placed 3rd in a very competitive tournament.There were 5.5 points between the top 3 teams.Without the injury to starting 145 lber Patrick Lokahaiser the tornado would have claimed the title.Place winners for Butler were Connor Foust 3rd at 80 lbs, Cody Houston 3rd at 90 lbs,Matt Sarvey 3rd at 95 lbs,Zack Hutchinson 4th at 95 lbs,Korey Caudill 3rd at 105 lbs,Jacob Olenick 3rd at 138 lbs, Will Bortmas 2nd at 145 lbs,Patrick Lokhaiser 4th at 145 lbs (did not lose a match but was forced to injury default in semifinals and consolation finals due to an injury.) Ryan Hannon 2nd at 155lbs,Zack Weaver 4th at 165 lbs,Bryant Butler 4th at 185lbs, and Matt Kenyon 3rd at 250 lbs.The non-starters for Butler (which includes some very good wrestlers) were all entered in the tournament as Butler-A (alternate) team.Butler A team was able to place 7th.This shows the depth and talent of our entire team.As a whole there were 28 wrestlers who won at least one match (including exhibitions).As well as the starting team nearly winning the title without having a single champion.

Last night the Butler Junior High Wrestling team defeated Gateway 68-16 in dual match competition. This win moves the “GT” to 6 wins and 1 loss on the year.
Receiving forfeits for the golden tornado were Jared Hinkle at 80 lbs, Connor Foust at 85 lbs, Cody Houston at 90 lbs, Kirk Gibson at 110 lbs, and Mike Fritz at 130 lbs.
Winning by pin for the tornado were Mason Kauffman at 100 lbs, Xavier Bennett at 115 lbs, Mason Boy at 122 lbs, and Ryan Hannon at 165 lbs.
Winning by technical fall by a score of 15-0 was Patrick Lokhaiser at 155 lbs.
Winning by decision were Jermiah Bortmas 3-1 at 105 lbs, Jake Olenick 5-0 at 138 lbs, and Will Bortmas 12-9 at 145 lbs.

Last night (Dec 23 rd ) the Butler Golden Tornado Wrestling team made an impressive home opener with an 85-15 rout of Hampton.Along the way the “GT” racked up 12 pins.This pushes their dual meet record to 5 wins with 1 loss.
Recording pins for the tornado were Connor Foust at 85 lbs, Cody Houston at 90 lbs, Matt Sarvey at 95 lbs, Mason Kauffman at 100 lbs, Kirk Gibson at 110 lbs, Xavier Gibson at 115lbs,Will Bortmas at 145 lbs, Patrick Lokhaiser at 155 lbs, Ryan Hannon at 165 lbs, Zack Weaver at 185 lbs, Bryant Butler at 210 lbs, and Matt Kenyon at 250 lbs.
Jared Hinkle picked up a forfeit for Butler at 80 lbs, Jermiah Bortmas won by major decision 14-3 at 105 lbs, and Jacob Olenick won a 3-2 decision at 138 lbs.
Butler had defeated Hampton on Saturday 70-27 at the Burrell Duals.The Tornado looked much better last night in a dominating performance that saw them win 12 matches wrestled while only losing 2.The team is off until after the new year when they will host Gateway at Butler on January 6 th .
Matt Sarvey was the most outstanding wrestler. He lost a 5-4 decision on Saturday and came back on Wednesday to pin the same kid who had beaten him. Way to go Matt!

Burrell Christmas Tournament: Third Place (12-19-09)
On Saturday December 19th the Butler Junior High Wrestling team competed at the Burrell Christmas Duals. The "GT" won 3 matches while losing only one. Butler lost a close opening match to eventual champion Norwin 45-43 . After that narrow loss the team came back strong to win three matches in a row and place 3rd. They defeated Hampton 70-27 , Plum 73-18 , and Burrell 66-31 . Zack Weaver was the most outstanding wrestler for the team with a 4-0 record and 4 pins while mostly competing a weight class up. Great job Weaver! The most outstanding wrestler vs: Norwin was Mason Boy for his thrilling overtime victory in his first match. Great job Mason! The most outstanding wrestler vs: Hampton was Jared Hinkle: after being down after the first period Jared showed out teams great conditioning in coming back to pin his opponent in the third period. Great job Hinkle!
The most outstanding wrestler for the Plum match was Ryan Hannon with his 3-0 decision and smart wrestling versus a very good opponent. Great job Hammer! The most outstanding wrestler against Burrell was RJ Cupp for filling in for injured David Slomers and coming away with a first period fall. Great job RJ!
Overall it was a successful weekend for the Junior High "GT" as they pushed their record to 4-1. The team still has 3 starters out of the line-up. Once everyone is healthy and in the line-up the Golden Tornado will be a force to be reckoned with! A special thanks to Mrs. Ferrari for supplying the team with healthy and nutritious food for the day!

The Butler Junior High Wrestling team started off their season yesterday (12/16/09) with an impressive 75-13 win over section opponent Knoch. The Golden Tornado were able win despite having 6 starters out of the line-up due to illeness or injury. Winning by pin for the "GT" were Cody Houston, Matt Sarvey, Kirk Gibson, Doug DeFrancisis, Jacob Olenick, Zack Weaver, and Aaron Conklin. Winning by forfeit for Butler were Jared Hinkle, Mason Kauffman, and Jeremiah Bortmas. Winning by technical fall were Xavier Bennett and Will Bortmas. Picking up a major decision for Butler was Ryan Hannon by a score of 13-3. Most outstanding wrestler for the Golden Tornado for the night was Doug DeFrancisis for pushing for the fall and pinning his opponent with just seconds remaining in the match for the bonus points for the team.
